Deep Dive on Hydration

Hydration is a seemingly simple concept, yet so many of us are walking around dehydrated on a consistent basis. Here are a few keys to help you stay hydrated.

  1. A little basic math to help you design a target. The MINIMUM effective dose for water intake is to consume in ounces, 50% of your body weight.
    (# lbs body weight) / 2 = X oz water
So for example, if you’re 140lbs, then your minimum water target for the day is 140/2 = 70oz.
Now please keep in mind that this is the MINIMUM amount of water you should drink in the day. If it is summer and you’re sweating a lot, drink more. If you’re highly active, drink more. If you’re using a sauna as part of your recovery habits, drink more.
  2. It’s not just about water. A key component of hydration is to replenish minerals. Gatorade got its claim to fame because it “replenishes electrolytes.” Well, unfortunately, Gatorade is chock-full of sugar and is not a good choice to get added minerals to help with hydration. It is important to look for a clean hydration beverage. We have a hydration product at the office that is great for this purpose, called Nutridyn Hydrate. Another option we’ve come across recently is Lemon Perfect Water.
  3. Mineral Cocktail – 1/2 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt, 1/2 lemon juiced, water
A great, delicious recipe for a homemade hydration drink!
  4. Consistency is key! Keep a water bottle with you during the day so you don’t forget to drink.
